the need

​Many newcomers to New Zealand are families or individuals who seek reunification with family members after their settlement. Knowing your family is safe helps more successful settlement in a new country.
 
Families we work with are diverse, and for confidentiality and privacy reasons we provide here a typical example of the sort of situations we encounter, taken from several different sources.
 
During civil war in her country, Eva was separated from her older children who were at college on the other side of the city when fighting began. They were taken in by family friends while she escaped across the border with her younger children. Once resettled in New Zealand she was able to establish that her children had survived, make contact with them and apply to have them join her and the rest of the family in New Zealand. A sole parent, learning English and trying to look after 3 younger children, she did not have the financial means to bring them here herself.
 
A typical budget for reuniting a refugee with their family member(s) would be as follows:
 
For a family of four from Herat, Afghanistan – Total: $10,000 approximately.
Includes: Airfares to NZ $2,200 each, Immigration NZ Application fees $900, Medical and X-Ray Certificates $1,000 per family. Travel to nearest INZ Panel Approved Physician in Kabul for Medical and X-Ray Certificates $500, NZ family accommodation approx. $350 per week, Costs to obtain Translations into English of official documentation as required by Immigration NZ e.g. Police Certificates $200.
